- If it seems like there is more than one race going on at a time during an American Le Mans Series event…it’s because there is. One of the trademarks of sports car endurance racing is the presence of multiple classes in each race. The classes are distinct in a number of factors – power, engine displacement and weight are some of the common differences.
As at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, there are four classes within the American Le Mans Series – two for prototypes and two for GT cars.
Think of Le Mans Prototypes as the dream machines of the future. At their heart, these are purpose-built race cars featuring both open and closed cockpits with the most advanced technology found in motorsport.
Cars in the Grand Touring (GT) classes are mirror images of production-based cars that are found in auto showrooms around the world. They are modified, of course, to enhance performance and take the punishment of the most demanding road tracks in the world.
