Dr. Donald E. Panoz
Founder

From pharmaceuticals to resorts and from race cars to wines, the accomplishments of Dr. Donald E. Panoz are the epitome of the entrepreneurial dream.

Though only involved in motorsports since the mid-1990s, Panoz has certainly made his mark as the owner of Panoz Motor Sports Group (PMSG). PMSG has become one of the most diversified and successful motorsports companies in the world. As owner of the American Le Mans Series, Panoz Racing Schools and three race tracks (Sebring International Raceway, Road Atlanta and Mosport International Raceway), PMSG

has prominent holdings in virtually every division of the motorsports industry. In addition, Elan Motorsports Technologies (EMT) is a Panoz company that designs and builds race car chassis and other high-tech equipment for the aerospace and communications industries.

In just a few years EMT has established a reputation as a world-class provider of motorsports technology at the highest level, thus making it the only American motorsports constructor to achieve such a reputation in an industry that has been dominated by European companies. Aside from being the only American constructor of race cars for the Indy Racing League (IRL), EMT is also the chassis builder for many open-wheel and sports racing cars, including those in the highly successful Star Mazda Championship.

Furthermore, in addition to boasting several Indy 500 wins and IRL series championships, EMT is exclusively designing and building race car chassis for the 2007 Champ Car World Series.

The son of a winning prizefighter, Panoz was born in Ohio and raised in a small West Virginia town. Panoz studied pharmacy at the University of Pittsburgh, and in 1960 he and childhood friend Mike Puskar founded a company in Morgantown, WV, named Mylan Laboratories, which would become one of the world's leading producers of generic drugs.

At the age of 34, Panoz sold Mylan and moved his family to Ireland, his mother's birthplace, where he founded Elan Pharmaceuticals. Elan quickly became known for its cutting edge research and innovative approach. Its most famous development was the creation of the transdermal method of medication delivery - the technology that led to the nicotine patch.

After going public in 1985, Elan set Wall Street records with four consecutive years of 100 percent profit growth. One of the foremost pharmaceutical research and development companies in the world, Elan owns hundreds of registered patents. Among the many pharmaceutical breakthroughs that Panoz and Elan have developed are well known medications such as Cardizem - a landmark heart medication.

In 1980, Panoz and his wife returned to the United States and turned their attention to building world-class resorts, the first of which was Chateau Elan Winery, Resort & Spa located just north of Atlanta, GA. Since its opening, Chateau Elan has garnered many awards and worldwide recognition as a five-star resort with an award-winning winery, championship golf courses and an internationally acclaimed spa. Following the success of Chateau Elan, Panoz built St. Andrews Bay Golf Resort & Spa located in the birthplace of golf - St. Andrews, Scotland - and Diablo Grande Winery & Resort in Northern California.

His involvement in motorsports came as a result of his son Danny's launch of a sports car company, aptly called Panoz Auto Development. The Panoz Esperante street car is a high-performance, hand-built sports car that has consistently received high praise from the automotive industry. Together, father and son agreed that world-class professional sports car racing would be the way to both infuse heritage and bring worldwide recognition to the Panoz automotive brand.

The first Panoz race team venture started with the Panoz GTR-1 in 1997. Success was immediate as the unique front-engine (like the road car) Panoz racer earned race wins and championships against the most famous sports car brands in the world. After the Panoz brand achieved success on the race track, his interest grew regarding the future of professional sports car racing. With support and encouragement from major sports car manufacturers such as Porsche and BMW, Panoz launched his vision by founding the American Le Mans Series - the leading sports car series in the world. In doing so, Panoz is considered by many to be the person who brought professional sports car racing back to world-class status.

Panoz and his wife, Nancy, have their primary residences in Braselton, GA, and Surfers Paradise, Australia. At age 71, he continues to take delight in tackling projects unimagined or too daunting for others.

Scott Atherton
President and Chief Executive Officer

Scott Atherton is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Panoz Motor Sports Group (PMSG), one of the most comprehensive motorsports companies in the world. Recognized as an industry leader in all areas of motorsports, PMSG encompasses the American Le Mans Series, three race tracks, racing schools and Elan Motorsports Technologies. In his leadership role, Atherton is responsible for all aspects of the day-to-day operation of the Series, including scheduling, relationships with participating manufacturers, sponsors and event promoters and the Series' executive duties with sanctioning body IMSA and the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO), the controlling entity of Le Mans. In total, Atherton oversees the operations of more than 10 Panoz motorsports companies with collective annual revenues of approximately $50 million.

Hand picked by American Le Mans Series founder Don Panoz in 2000, Atherton is given credit for the amazing development of the Panoz motorsports companies which in just seven short years have achieved Panoz' dream of becoming the only completely integrated North American-based motorsports group in the world.

The holdings within the Panoz Motor Sports Group include the American Le Mans Series, Road Atlanta, Sebring International Raceway, Mosport International Raceway, Elan Motorsports Technologies (comprised of Elan Composites, Elan Power Products, Elan Precision Engineering and Van Diemen) and Panoz Racing Schools. Under Atherton's guidance, Elan Motorsports Technologies pulled off a motorsports coup in October of 2005 when the renowned builder of race cars and racing engines beat out seven other entities to be the exclusive builder and supplier of the new chassis for the Champ Car World Series.

Among his many responsibilities, Atherton serves on the board of Panoz Auto Development - builder of the Panoz Esperante sports car - and is active with the ACCUS (Automobile Competition Committee for the United States) and LMES (Le Mans Endurance Series) boards.

Atherton joined the Panoz firm in August of 2000 after serving as President and General Manager of California Speedway in Fontana, CA. He served in a senior management capacity with Penske Motorsports, Inc. for several years, first at Nazareth (PA) Speedway before shifting to the Penske-owned California facility. Penske Motorsports was acquired by International Speedway Corporation (ISC) in 1998, and Atherton remained with ISC until he accepted the position with Panoz. Prior to his time with Penske and ISC, Atherton served as President and General Manager of Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, CA, for five years. He also formerly served on the Board of Directors of the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and is a past president of the promoter group of Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART).

There is no such thing as a "typical" week for Atherton. A weekly business schedule for him may include meeting with auto manufacturers in Detroit, conducting business in the Greater Atlanta corporate office, traveling to France for a day of meetings with the ACO, returning to North America for meetings at Mosport International Raceway or Sebring International Raceway and traveling to New York City to participate in a press conference announcing the Series' next world-class initiative.

Aside from being near and dear to his heart, motorsports has captivated the interest of the Seattle, WA, area native for most of his life. Initially he was active as a go-kart racer and amateur Formula Ford competitor. After graduating from the University of Washington with a degree in marketing, his first professional job in motorsports involved working with the high-profile Domino's Pizza CART racing team (Doug Shierson Racing and driver Al Unser, Jr.). Atherton's role also included various marketing and promotional endeavors as well as event sponsorship with the Domino's Pizza 500 at Pocono Raceway. After nine years with Domino's, where he ultimately achieved the position of Regional Vice President, Atherton became General Manager of Laguna Seca Raceway.

Atherton and his wife, Nancy, reside in Gainesville, GA, with their three children.
